Already known to the mountaineers who tried to climb the Cerviño at the end of the 18th
century, its fortunate tourist development was due to the large cable car systems.
Thanks to a considerable increase in accommodation and sports facilities, the district is now an
internationally renowned holiday resort.
The ski resort offers an incomparable natural scenery, dominated by Cervigno, which reigns
with its unmistakable granite pyramid; the doma-skiable, connected to the Swiss slopes of
Zermatt and those of Valtournenche, extends over 350 kilometres: it is one of the largest in
the Alps, where you can ski all day long without doing the same section twice, thus offering
you the possibility to choose from a wide range of routes suitable for every type of skier.
In the company of a ski instructor or an alpine guide, you can take on some of the most
spectacular off-piste routes in the Alps. You can ski here all year round, even in summer,
thanks to the systems that allow you to quickly reach the Plateau Rosa and the Ventina glacier.
There are plenty of walks for trekking enthusiasts. Cervinia offers an 18-hole golf course and
one of the highest in Europe; there´s an illuminated ice-skating and skating system, heated
indoor swimming pools, tennis courts, horse riding, playgrounds and adventure parks and
sport fishing and you can also go heliskiing. And for the more intrepid, Breuil Cervinia offers
paragliding, kitesurfing, airboarding or snow tubing, snow biking and snowmobile tours.
Cervinia, the noblest rock in Europe, as an admiring old visitor once called it, with its majestic
mass has always been an irresistible attraction for mountaineering enthusiasts. Many people,
some of them famous, have managed to climb this fascinating peak thanks to the experienced
guidance of Valdostane Alpine Guides. A Festival of Guides is organised every year on 15
August. It is an occasion for folklore events as well as practical demonstrations of climbing
techniques and first aid. At the end of July, the Cerviño International Film Festival, a mountain
film festival, is organised. Of the events, we would like to mention the end-of-year torchlight
procession, the high-altitude races of the best skyrunners, the Maxiavalanche, the
international mountain bike and snowboard competitions. Finally, it is worth mentioning the Mezzalama Trophy, a prestigious ski mountaineering competition organised every two years
on a breathtaking route between Cervinia and Gressoney-La-Trinité, which reaches 4,000
metres above sea level, crossing the highest peaks of the Plateau del Monte Rosa.
